The total number of seaside recreation places in Montenegro is impossible to calculate, but we present you the most famous and popular. Here is our Top 10.
In the middle of the Great Beach — Velika Plaža — lays Copacabana, the namesake of the Brazilian beach in Rio de Janeiro. The beach is almost 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) long, and has children playground, many sun loungers, and a spacious parking lot. There is a cafe nearby and a fancy restaurant serving traditional Montenegrin and international cuisine.
Veliki Pijesak, Dobra Voda, Bar
The village of Dobra Voda sits between Bar (8 kilometers or 5 miles) and Ulcinj (12 kilometers or 7.5 miles). The cozi Great Sand — Veliki Pijesak — beach offers a breathtaking view of the endless sea. The beach is mostly pebbled with some sandy areas. There are sun beds, changing rooms, showers, cafes and bars.
It is a great place for families with children, and a convenient location in a sheltered bay, away from the winds, makes Veliki Pijesak ideal for quiet romantic evenings.
Only half a kilometer (0.3 mile) away from Petrovac, Lučice is one of the most beautiful beaches in the country. A small bay, surrounded on by mountains and an amphitheater of dense green forest, lies far from civilization and city fuss. It is equipped with sun beds and umbrellas; the culinary component is represented by a restaurant with traditional dishes and a cafe with a pizza oven. Lučice Beach has the Blue Flag certificate, which confirms its high quality standard of the water and the recreation area.
The most popular seaside vacation spot in Budva because of its proximity to the Old Town, Mogren Beach consists of two sandy beaches connected by a passage in a rock.
The beaches were named after the Spanish navigator Mogrin, who landed here with his crew after a shipwreck. In gratitude, Mogrin built a church, dedicating it to the patron saint of travelers Anthony of Padua. The church was destroyed in the 20th century, in its place now a restaurant, but people still come here on June 13th to honor the day of Saint Anthony.
The interesting fact about the Mogren beach — the sun rises and sets here much earlier than in other places on the coast. The soft sand makes it comfortable for kids, and young people spend days and nights here having fun in cafes and swimming in the cerulean waves of Jadran, this is what the Adriatic Sea is called in the Balkans.
Plavi Horizonti, Tivat
Plavi Horizonti Beach in the bay of the Lustica peninsula is surrounded by olive groves, so it is nice and cool even in the hottest days of August. Compliance with the worldwide standards is marked with Blue Flag certificate. Here you can rent sunbeds and umbrellas, have lunch or dinner at the restaurant, but come early, the place gets very crowded.
Ada Bojana, Ulcinj
Ada Bojana Island is the southernmost tip of Montenegro’s coast. The beach lays in a beautiful place where sea envelopes the freshwater of Bojana river. It has been a nudist beach since 1974, and a very popular Yugoslav drama The Beauty of Vice was filmed here in 1986.
Nowadays it is a picturesque place with smooth sand, shallow water and good fish restaurants. For the beauty of nature and the high level of service Ada Bojana received an annual tourism award Wild Beauty Award.
One of the most beautiful beaches of the Budva Riviera is also the longest in Montenegro almost 2 kilometers ( 1.2 miles). Becici is a perfect place for a family vacation, especially for parents with small children. The beach is wide enough to accommodate thousands of tourists and with many hotels and restaurants nearby, including posh five-stars Splendid Resort.
Kraljeva plaža, Sveti Stefan
Kraljeva plaža hides in a small bay, between emerald forest and turquoise water. The name translates as Queen’s Beach — Maria Karadjordjevic, the mother of Peter II, the last King of Yugoslavia, came here very often. This is still a disputed territory, the son of Peter II, Crown Prince Alexander II, claims it, and thanks to this, the beach has been preserved in its historical form.
One of the country's three largest beaches and one of the most beautiful on the whole Adriatic coast, Jaz stretches between Straža and Grbalj mountains.
Crystal clear water washes the pebble-sandy shore. There is a playground for kids, camping, multiple restaurants and bars and huge parking. Water sports enthusiasts can rent the necessary equipment.
The beach is divided into two parts, the smaller one used to be a nudist only area and although it is now a regular public beach, nudists, too, have not forgotten the way here.
The little slice of heaven, sandy Kamenovo, spreads out between Rafailovići and Pržno. The beach attracts all kinds of tourists from families with little children to athletes, but somehow is not very crowded. You can rent sun loungers and umbrellas here, and the restaurant by the water offers hearty and tasty dishes. On this stretch of coast the sun does not set for a long time, and the water has a stunning turquoise hue. There is a free parking, but consider walking the panoramic seaside trail from Budva.
